Practice Overview

The bulk of Edward's practice is in mainstream chancery work with an emphasis on trusts, landlord & tenant, revenue law, charities, occupational pension schemes and property law in general. He has advised on the effect of the Finance Act 2006 on trusts, especially in connection with life assurance policies.

Prior to taking silk in 1976 he was one of the Conveyancing Counsel of the Court to a number of government departments.

From 1982 to 1997 he sat regularly as a Deputy High Court Judge in the Chancery Division, and a number of his judgments appear in the law reports.

From 1983 to 1985 Edward was Chairman of the Committee of Inquiry appointed by the Minister of Housing on the Management of Privately Owned Blocks of Flats; the Committee's report led to the enactment of the Landlord and Tenant Act 1987. He was not, he hastens to add, in any way responsible for the drafting of the Act, which was described by Lord Bingham as "dismal"!
