Practice Overview
James Walmsley has been a tenant since September 2008, having previously been the pupil of Rupert Reed, Martin Hutchings, Jonathan Evans, Paul Newman QC and Emily Campbell.
Over his first few years of practice he has been instructed as junior on a considerable amount of high profile large scale High Court litigation, including: the PNPF pensions case (occupational pension schemes; heard in January 2010, appeal scheduled for May 2011), the easyJet brand licence case (commercial IP; heard in June 2010) and BCCG v Societe Generale & Ors (structured financial products; listed for November 2011).
He also acts on his own account on cases across the spectrum of Chambers' work, and continues to build a broad commercial chancery practice.
Qualifications
James read maths and philosophy at Oxford, gaining the top first in his year. After graduating in 1999, James gained a range of commercial, financial and policy-related experience in the private and public sector.
In 2006 he obtained a distinction in the Graduate Diploma in Law at City University and in 2007 was graded 'Outstanding' on the Bar Vocational Course.
He won a number of scholarships and prizes over the course of his legal training, and has also worked in the legal department of The Crown Estate. Since 1999 he has been a fellow of All Souls College, Oxford.
