Practice Overview
Tom joined Chambers in September 2011, upon the successful completion of his 12 month pupillage. His pupil supervisors were Rupert Reed, Martin Hutchings QC, Julian Greenhill, Jonathan Evans and Edward Sawyer. Tom experienced a wide range of Chambers' work during pupillage, including general commercial disputes, professional negligence, contractual disputes, pensions, real property and landlord and tenant. He is now keen to develop a broad commercial chancery practice incorporating Chambers' main areas of work.
Highlights of Tom's pupillage year included assisting and shadowing members of Chambers during:
- A two week professional negligence trial in a claim against a firm of solicitors for allegedly negligent settlement advice (Langsam v Beachcroft LLP [2011] EWHC 1451 (Ch));
- A week-long commercial arbitration about whether an English law agreement guaranteed obligations relating to the lease of a commercial property in Russia;
- The two-day Court of Appeal hearing of the appeal against the first instance decision in Daventry v Daventry [2010] EWHC 1935 (Ch), a case concerning both common and unilateral mistake rectification;
- The two-day Supreme Court hearing of the appeal of the Court of Appeal decision in Bridge Trustees v Yates [2010] EWCA Civ 179, on the question of the defining characteristics of "money purchase benefits".
