Edward has undertaken a considerable amount of work involving financial services, acting both for the regulator and the regulated. Edward's financial services cases often overlap with other areas of practice, in particular insolvency, fraud and professional negligence. Cases include:

  • Acting as junior counsel for the main defendants during the five month Chancery Division trial in Langbar International v Rybak, a case which involved allegations of market abuse on the Alternative Investment Market of the LSE (see The Lawyer, 24 September 2007 and [2007] All ER (D) 178 (Aug)).

  • Advising on the winding up of a regulated firm under the powers in FSMA 2000.

  • Acting for the claimant in a claim against a major investment bank for breaches of the FSMA regulatory regime in the conduct of investment business.

  • Acting for the defendant brokers in a claim by an investor in relation to futures trading.

  • Appearing both at first instance and in the Court of Appeal as a junior in R (Land) v Executive Council of the Accounts' Joint Disciplinary Scheme [2002] All ER (D) 201, in which Ernst & Young sought to stay a regulatory investigation in relation to the audit of Equitable Life.
