Jonathan's practice encompasses all aspects of commercial litigation, taking in subject matters ranging from contractual disputes arising out of business transactions, through to claims for the recovery of stolen historical artefacts.

Recent/notable cases include:

  • Atkinson v Commissioners for HM Revenue & Customs [2010] UKFTT 108 (TC); [2010] W.T.L.R. 745; [2010] S.T.I. 2123 - Acting for HMRC in dispute concerning proper construction of the agricultural property relief provisions of the Inheritance Tax Act 1984 (case currently on appeal to the Upper Tribunal (Tax and Chancery))

  • Acting for defendant land owning company in dispute regarding the terms of a contract for sale of land in respect of substantial commercial premises (BDW Trading Ltd (t/a Barratt North London) v JM Rowe [2010] EWHC 1987 (Ch)) (with Michael Barnes QC) (2010).

  • Acting as junior counsel for defendants in the Cayman-based Re Jahre litigation involving claims for US$250 million alleged to belong to a Norwegian shipping tycoon - the case was described in The Independent (27 October 2008) as "truly epic litigation" of "mind-numbing complexity" and in The Lawyer (22 September 2008) as "among the longest-running cases in legal history" [2008].

  • Acting for defendant purchaser in interpleader proceedings concerning ownership of medieval Italian manuscripts (2009).

  • Acting for claimant gold mining company in proceedings to recover £8m in respect of fraud committed by company employees (with Tom Lowe QC) (2009).

  • Acting for defendant land owning company in dispute regarding the terms of a contract for sale of land in respect of substantial commercial premises (with Michael Barnes QC) (2009).
