In his capacity as panel counsel to the Crown (B-Panel), Jonathan has acquired substantial public law experience and undertakes government work of all kinds. Jonathan is regularly instructed by HM Revenue & Customs and the Department for Work and Pensions.
Other departments for whom Jonathan has acted include the Ministry of Defence, the Home Office, the Department for Transport, Bona Vacantia and the Prison Service.
Recent/notable cases include:
- Advising the Secretary of State for Justice on residential landlord and tenant issues arising in respect of government owned land (with James Eadie QC) (2009).
- Icebreaker 1 LLP v Revenue and Customs Commissioners [2010] UKFTT 6 (TC).
- Acting for HM Revenue & Customs in various appeals before the Tax Chamber of the new tribunal system in respect of the proper tax treatment of film financing schemes involving limited liability partnerships (2009).
- Acting for the Department for Work and Pensions to enforce liabilities arising under the child support legislation (2009).
- Acting for the Department of Transport in adverse possession proceedings before the adjudicator to HM Land Registry (2009).
- Advising the Ministry of Defence in respect of business tenancy issues arising on the sale of government-owned land (2009).
- Acting for the Department of Transport in employment proceedings involving allegations of sexual discrimination (2009).
- Acting for HM Revenue & Customs in an appeal before the HMRC Special Commissioners in respect of the proper tax treatment of various Channel Islands-based trusts and companies (2007).
