Julian has acted in a number of large contractual disputes arising out of patent and trademark licences.

Recent and notable cases include:

  • Advising and acting for a leading multi-national chemical company in relation to a dispute over a licence for the use of technology used in the manufacture of industrial pigments (2007).

  • Acting in a High Court dispute between two tobacco multinationals over the terms of a trade mark licence for Southern Africa - Philip Morris v Venfin (2004).

  • Acting in arbitral proceedings conducted under ICC Rules in Toronto, Canada concerning a dispute over the licence for the principal patents covering the manufacture and use of polynucleotide arrays, the enabling technology in genetic analysis - Affymetrix v Oxford Gene Technology (2004).
