Andrew was a scholar of St John's College, Cambridge, where he obtained a First Class Honours Degree in law. He was awarded the Clifford Chance David Gottlieb prize for obtaining the highest examination mark in his year, the Jacovides prize for international law and other college and university awards for gaining a first in each year of his degree. In 2002, Andrew completed a Masters Degree at Harvard Law School where his studies focussed on law and economics, contract law and negotiation. Before being called to the Bar, Andrew was also awarded Hardwicke and Mansfield Scholarships by Lincoln's Inn.

Practice

Andrew has a broad practice covering general commercial and traditional chancery work. Within these fields, he has particularly strong interests in trusts (both offshore and onshore), pensions, commercial contracts, professional negligence, company and partnership disputes as well as property related work. He enjoys both the advisory and advocacy sides of his practice and is experienced in mediation and arbitration. Many of Andrew’s cases have an international element; he is currently working on offshore trust cases involving the laws of Bermuda, Jersey, the Isle of Man, St Kitts & Nevis and the Cayman Islands.

Notable cases that Andrew has worked on include:

-Charman v Charman (Court of Appeal decision involving the largest ever contested divorce award in England and Wales and which considered the extent to which the assets in an offshore discretionary trust should be taken into account for ancillary relief purposes);

- Ross River Limited v Cambridge City Football Club Ltd (Claim for the rescission of the sale of a football ground and an overage agreement on grounds of bribery and fraudulent misrepresentation);

- Al-Bassam v Al-Bassam (Long running dispute involving issues of probate, succession, domicile, conflict of laws, forgery);

- Harley Street Capital v Tchigirinski and others (Claims of fraud concerning the rights of minority shareholders, derivative proceedings, service out, freezing injunction, breach of fiduciary duties);

- Demco Investment and Commercial SA v S-E Banken Forsakring Holding Aktiebolag (A large scale arbitration under the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce relating to pensions mis-selling, the conduct of the Pensions Review and indemnities under a sale and purchase agreement);

- Advising a FTSE 100 company on how to restructure the funding of a deficit in its occupational pension scheme;

- Advising the sponsoring employer of a very large occupational pension scheme based in Bermuda

- Professional negligence claims against the administrators of an occupational pension scheme in respect of the failure to introduce limited price indexation properly;

- An ongoing investigation by the SEC, IRS and New York District Attorney into a series of settlements administered in the Isle of Man;

-Acting for one partner in relation to a dispute over the ownership of a successful hedge fund business

- Advising a group of investors seeking a class action lawsuit to recover losses arising out of investments in split capital investment trusts.

- A commercial property arbitration concerning the validity of a notice of termination under a long term commercial lease;

- A successful appeal to the Lands Tribunal against a decision of a Leasehold Valuation Tribunal in respect of the reasonableness of a service charge;

Publications and Talks

Andrew is the current author of the Negligence Section of Cordery on Solicitors and recently co-authored a chapter on Money Laundering in the Law Society's Probate Yearbook.

Andrew regularly gives talks in-house to law firms and at legal conferences such as the CLT Commercial Property Litigation Conference and the North West Association of Pension Lawyers Conference. Recent topics which Andrew has addressed include: the rectification of pension scheme documents, the limits of the Pensions Ombudsman's jurisdiction, the law on sham trusts and practical tips for possession hearings.

Andrew is a member of the Association of Pension Lawyers, Chancery Bar Association, COMBAR, Bar Pro Bono Panel and the Free Representation Unit.

Professional Reputation

Andrew is recommended in the 2008 edition of Chambers & Partners as an “up-and-coming individual” in the field of traditional chancery work.

Away from chambers, Andrew enjoys rugby, tennis, snowboarding and overseas travel.
