Gabriel Hughes

It is with great sadness that we report the death last month (September 2023) of Gabriel Hughes. Called to the Bar in 1978, after obtaining a first class degree in law at New Hall, Cambridge, Gabriel joined chambers in 1979 after spending 6 months at Farrer & Co. She carried on a principally advisory practice at the Chancery Bar until her retirement in 2014, specialising in real property, trusts and tax. Gabriel had both an exceptional intellect and a robustly practical approach to problems that was greatly valued by her clients. She was always willing to share her thoughts and give of her time to other members of chambers, had a lively and often caustic sense of humour, and is remembered with warmth and affection.

She is survived by her three siblings Kate, David and Richard to whom the members and staff of chambers extend their condolences.

A memorial service is likely to be held in London during the summer of 2024 – please contact Danny Smillie who will provide further details, once these are known.
